Chiropractic and sinus congestion
Chiropractic and Sinus Congestion
Welcome to fall, a personal favorite time of year. With that said we are also heading into cold and virus season. The stuffy sinuses, running noses, cough and congestion have been a regular complaint in our office the last couple of weeks. One of the added benefits of chiropractic care is its boost to the immune system and help with sinus drainage. Let’s discuss just two reasons why chiropractors can aid in mucus drainage.
- The relationship between the position of the neck and cervical lymphatic drainage is important. Imagine your neck vertebrae is in the wrong position, this may limit ability to drain down the anterior/posterior cervical lymphatic chains. This may cause a backup of mucus in the head and sinuses. Mucus sitting in an area (sinus, ear, throat) for prolonged period may lead to infection. The analogy in our office is: a kink in the water hose stops flow of water and causes back up pressure in the hose.
- A recent (2023) study in the Journal of Chiropractic medicine is looking at the relationship between upper cervical adjustments and the temporary increase in SIgA. SIgA is a significant immunoglobulin found in mucosal secretions, contributing to the immune system’s first line of defense against pathogens. This study display a significate increase in SIgA following the upper cervical adjustment for 30 minutes. This exciting data displays a direct correlation between the upper neck adjustment and the immune system and may open the door for further studies.
These are just 2 ways chiropractic may aid in your sinus congestion and boost your first line of defense in your mucus for the start to the cold/flu season. Happy adjusting!
